This article suggests a new reason why it cannot.The founding social contract of the new millennium is the End User License Agreement (EULA), not the U.S. This report investigates how we can use new media to foster the growth and sustenance of environments that support connected learning in a broad-based and equitable way. This model is based on evidence that the most resilient, adaptive, and effective learning involves individual interest as well as social support to overcome adversity and provide recognition. Connected learning is realized when a young person is able to pursue a personal interest or passion with the support of friends and caring adults, and is in turn able to link this learning and interest to academic achievement, career success or civic engagement. This report is a synthesis of ongoing research, design, and implementation of an approach to education called “connected learning.” It advocates for broadened access to learning that is socially embedded, interest-driven, and oriented toward educational, economic, or political opportunity. We consider the impact of the hybrid system on governance and corporation-player relationship. We analyze how and why the hybrid system emerged. Through their interactions, players reconciled norms and rules. These discussions provided players rich opportunities to learn norms and rules. Riot Games' official forums were a key venue for these discussions. Players engaged in a variety of conversations to interpret formal rules, communicate with Riot Games, analyze behaviors, and articulate norms. Norms and rules both govern player behavior. We found that governance in League of Legends is a hybrid system. We conducted an ethnographic study concerning the interplay between player norms and rules in League of Legends. To deal with this situation, they devised the " Tribunal " system, a crowdsourcing system that leverages player norms to identify and punish disruptive players. Riot Games, the maker of League of Legends, one of the world's largest multiplayer online games, receives thousands of player complaints about disruptive behavior almost every day. Disruptive behaviors such as flaming and griefing are pervasive and problematic in many online venues. ![]()
